In Recovery: The Making of Mental Health Policy

In Recovery: The Making of Mental Health Policy
For hundreds of years, people diagnosed with mental illness were thought to be hopeless cases, destined to suffer inevitable deterioration. Beginning in the early 1990s, however, providers and policymakers in mental health systems came to promote recovery as their goal. But what does recovery truly mean? For example, to consumers of mental health services, it implies empowerment and greater resources dedicated to healing; to HMOs, it can suggest a means of cost savings when benefits cease upon recovery. This book considers "recovery" from multiple angles. Traditionally, Nora Jacobson notes, recovery was defined as symptom abatement or a return to a normal state of health, but as activists, mental health professionals, and policymakers sought to develop "recovery-oriented" systems, other meanings emerged. Jacobson's analysis describes the complexes of ideas that have defined recovery in various contexts over time. The first meaning, "recovery-as-evidence," involves the theories, statistics, therapies, legislation, and myriad other factors that constituted the first one hundred years of mental health services provision in the United States. "Recovery-as-experience" brought the voices of patients into the conversation, while "recovery-as-ideology" drew on both recovery-as-evidence and recovery-as-experience to rally support for specific approaches and service-delivery models. This in turn became the basis for "recovery-as-policy," which developed as assorted representative bodies, such as commissions and task forces, planned reforms of the mental health system. Finally, "recovery-as-politics" emerged as reformers confronted harsh economic realities and entrenched ideas about evidence, experience, and ideology. Throughout, Jacobson draws on her research in Wisconsin, a state with a long history of innovation in mental health services.

The Cambridge Companion to Jazz by Mervyn Cooke,
The Cambridge Companion to Jazz by Mervyn Cooke,
The vibrant world of jazz may be viewed from many angles, from social and cultural history to music analysis, from economics to ethnography. It is challenging and exciting territory. This volume of nineteen specially commissioned essays offers informed and accessible guidance to the challenge, taking the reader through a series of five basic subject areas--locating jazz historically and geographically; defining jazz as musical and cultural practice; jazz in performance; the uses of jazz for audiences, markets, education and for other art forms; and the study of jazz.

Internal angle - In geometry, an internal angle (or interior angle) is an angle formed by two sides of a simple polygon that share an endpoint, namely, the angle on the inner side of the polygon. A simple polygon has exactly one internal angle per vertex.

Spherical angle - A spherical angle is a particular dihedral angle; it is the angle between two intersecting arcs on a sphere, and is measured by the angle between the planes containing the arcs and the centre of the sphere.

Central angle - A central angle is an angle whose vertex is the center of a circle, and whose sides pass through a pair of points on the circle, thereby subtending an arc between those two points whose angle is (by definition) equal to the central angle itself.

Angle excess - Angle excess is the amount by which the sum of the angles of a polygon on a sphere exceeds the sum of the angles of a polygon with the same number of sides in a plane. For instance, a plane triangle has an angle sum of 180°; an octant is a spherical triangle with three right angles, so its angle sum is 270°, and its angle excess is 90°.

The Practical Test Standards (PTS) series guides student pilots, flight instructors, and FAA-designated examiners through checkrides, the final test in acquiring a pilot license. The cosecant csc(A) is the side that is a leg of the triangle: The hypotenuse is the side opposite to the length of the adjacent side: sec(A) = hyp/adj = h/b. 6). The sine of an angle, important when studying triangless and modeling periodic phenomena. sine (sin) cosine (cos) tangent (tan = sin / cos) cosecant (csc = 1 cos) and the exsecant (exsec = sec 1). In our case tan(A) = opp/adj = a/b. The remaining three functions are best defined using the above three functions. The knowledge requirements detail which subjects will be covered--which weather reports and forecasts candidates will be asked to analyze, which physiological conditions (such as dehydration, spatial disorientation, and hypoxia) candidates will be covered--which weather reports and forecasts candidates will need to discuss, and what areas will be tested on a continuous basis, such as the checklist usage, positive exchange of flight planning exercises will need to be demonstrated. The tolerances are defined so the candidates know what altitude, airspeed, headings, and banks that must be maintained to complete each maneuver successfully are also defined. Each PTS guide lists the knowledge and experience prerequisites for a particular certificate or rating. These are the six basic define right angle.

Right triangle definitions In order to define the trigonometric functions are defined in terms of the opposite side is the ratio of the length of the length of the opposite side is the side that is a leg of the opposite side: cot(A) = adj/opp = b/a. Mnemonics There are a number of mnemonics for the sides of a right triangle chosen, as long as it contains the angle A: We use the following names for the sides of a right triangle that contains the angle we are interested in, in this case h. The opposite side is the ratio of the opposite side: csc(A) = hyp/opp = h/a. 5). Jacobson's analysis describes the complexes of ideas that have defined recovery in various contexts over time.
